How to use

Free to use with no sign-up, no install and no usage limit.

Tick the boxes or type a number — every view stays in step, so you can start from whichever end you already know.

The special bits are included because they are usually the reason you looked the permission up. 4755 and 1777 cannot be explained by the nine ordinary bits alone.

When a special bit is set, the execute character changes. It is lowercase when execute is also granted and uppercase when it is not, which is why rwsr-xr-x and rwSr--r-- mean different things. Both directions are handled here.

You can paste a line straight from ls -l. The leading character for the file type is stripped for you rather than rejected.

The finished chmod command is shown at the bottom, ready to copy.

Nothing is sent to a server. The calculation happens inside your browser.
