The arithmetic is deliberately awkward in shops. 500 g for £9.90 against 1.2 kg for £21.90 is not something most people work out standing in an aisle, and pricing often takes advantage of that.
The multipack field exists for the same reason. A box of six at one price and a single at another cannot be compared until the pack count is folded in, and that is exactly where the bigger box often turns out to be the worse deal.
Units are converted within a category, so grams and kilograms sit on the same scale. Categories are not mixed: comparing a price per gram with a price per millilitre has no meaning, so the ranking is withheld rather than made up.
Prices can be pasted with currency symbols and thousands separators still attached, because that is how they arrive when copied from a shopping site.
Nothing you type is sent to a server. Everything is calculated inside your browser.
