Databases and log files usually keep an IPv4 address as a single 32-bit integer, because comparing and indexing integers is far cheaper than comparing text. Reading those rows means converting back.

Paste an address in any of the forms and the rest appear together. Dotted notation, a plain decimal, a 0x hexadecimal and a 0b binary string are all recognised without picking a mode first.

An octet written with a leading zero is rejected rather than guessed. Some systems read 010 as ten and others as eight, and there is no way to tell which one you meant.

The range an address belongs to is shown alongside. A private, loopback or link-local address behaves nothing like a public one, and the mistake is easy to make while reading a log.

For IPv6, the expanded form makes every group visible and the compressed form follows RFC 5952: only the longest run of zero groups is shortened, ties go to the left, and a single zero group is left alone.

Nothing you type is sent to a server. Everything is calculated inside your browser.
