Drop in a photo or a screenshot and the colours that actually cover the picture come back, each with the share of the image it fills.

Colours are grouped before they are counted. A photograph holds thousands of slightly different values, and counting them as they are would return ten shades that look identical to the eye.

Each swatch is the average of the pixels grouped into it, not the centre of the group. Using the centre produces colours that are not in the picture, and they look wrong the moment you place them next to it.

Groups that land close together are merged and their shares added, so a colour split across a boundary does not lose its place in the ranking.

Transparent pixels are skipped. Where the background shows through there is no colour to count, and including them would drag every result towards whatever the canvas happens to be.

Sorting by lightness instead of frequency is useful when you want a ramp rather than a set of accents.

Your image is never uploaded. The pixels are read inside your browser.
