Upload one square-ish image and six PNGs come out: 16, 32 and 48 for browser tabs and bookmarks, 180 for the iOS home screen, and 192 and 512 for Android install icons.
A source of at least 512 pixels on the short side keeps the largest icon sharp. Anything smaller gets scaled up, and an upscaled icon looks soft exactly where it is largest.
Images that are not square are cropped from the centre rather than squashed. Stretching an icon is more noticeable than losing its edges, and logos usually have their meaning in the middle.
Padding shrinks the artwork inside the square. Icons drawn edge to edge often look cramped at 16 pixels, and a little room around them reads better in a tab.
The background colour fills the square behind a transparent image. iOS in particular ignores transparency on home screen icons and composites them onto black, which is rarely what you want.
The HTML tags and the web manifest are generated alongside, pointing at the file names produced here. Put the files where the path says and paste the tags into your head element.
